A Fortress with a Long History

The Alcázar was built in 1328 by King Alfonso XI of Castile on the remains of earlier Roman and Islamic buildings. During the Middle Ages it served as a royal residence for the Catholic Monarchs, Isabella I of Castile and Ferdinand II of Aragon.

The fortress played an important role during the Reconquista, when Christian kingdoms were fighting to reclaim territories from Muslim rule in the Iberian Peninsula.

It is also believed that Christopher Columbus met the Catholic Monarchs here in 1486 while presenting his plan to travel west and reach Asia by sea.

The Famous Gardens

One of the most remarkable parts of the Alcázar is its spectacular gardens. These gardens were redesigned in the 20th century but maintain a traditional Andalusian style with long pools, fountains, palm trees and colorful flowers.
